Psalm 139:14
Psalm 139:14 in the King James Bible reads, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” This is a verse that my children learn by heart at about 3 years old. It is a perfect verse for children to learn and lean on as they grow up. It is a great reminder that no matter what anyone says, we were made by God, so we are special.
Kids can sometimes be mean. Just because you homeschool, or don’t take your kids to daycare doesn’t mean they will never experience mean kids. Whether it’s at church, at the park, or right there in your own home someone will one day say something not so nice to your child. It has been my experience that it isn’t always a child, but an adult. Either way this is a good verse to use to reassure your precious little one that they are special to God.
Self-love
As adults we all need to practice some self-love. A negative self-worth is not good for anyone and can be debilitating. When we remember that we were fearfully and wonderfully made by a creator that loves us, it’s a great reminder that we should love ourselves too. If he who is perfect and all knowing loves me, who am I to say that I am unworthy of love? On that same note if he can forgive me of all my sin, knowing exactly what I have done, who am I to be bitter at myself?
When we look at ourselves through the eyes of God, we see that we are much more than our short comings. We are all fearfully and wonderfully made by him. If that weren’t enough he wants us to love him too. He desires to have a close personal relationship with each and every one of us. He loves us so much that he gave us his only begotten son as payment for our sin. Not only did Jesus take away our sin and save us from an eternity in hell, he took away the wall separating us from God. (Ephesians 2:11-22 Please read this passage for a better understanding.)
When we see just how much we mean to God our Father, we can begin to have a greater love for ourselves. When we love ourselves with a godly love the things we can accomplish are boundless.
Love others
Another amazing thing that will happen when we have a healthy view of ourselves through the eyes of our Creator is that we will love others. Knowing that we are fearfully and wonderfully made is only part of it. Realizing that everyone is made by the same Creator the same way will help us love them too. If he made them the same way he made you he must love them just as much as he does you. This knowledge helps us have more grace on them, and show more mercy as well.
If there is a person in your life you are having a hard time loving, try praying for them. It is nearly impossible to dislike someone you are praying for. Sometimes there are people who just push our buttons. We may not even know why they push them so much. These are the people we need to make sure we are praying for. Just try it and see if your heart doesn’t start softening up toward that person.
Another way to apply this verse is when you feel road rage sneaking up. Remember that that guy or gal are also fearfully and wonderfully made my a God who loves them. If they are important to him they also should be to you. Instead of calling them a mean name or yelling at them about how stupid that was, ask God to bless them. Maybe they just got a call that someone they love is in trouble. They may have gotten into an argument with their spouse and aren’t thinking clearly. Maybe they just don’t really know how to drive. My point is that we can’t know what they are going through, and it may even be that they just made an honest mistake. God does know though and only he can help them do better next time. You being upset doesn’t do them or anyone else any good.
Glorify God with your attitude
We can also learn to love everyone that would otherwise upset us or cause us to not glorify God the way we should when we apply this verse. After all we should be living to glorify him. Strive to glorify God with your attitude toward yourself, your family, and even strangers. You can do this by showing love not wrath. With prayer not cursing. By singing a beautiful hymn instead of yelling. It could even be as simple as a smile. It seems like no one smiles anymore. Above all else tell someone what God has done for you through the shed blood of Christ.
If you do not know Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and savior please reach out to me. I would love to tell you exactly how you can know him. You can read my testimony of how he saved me from my sin here.
