What trust is?
Generally speaking we all have some working knowledge of what trust is. Even little children have some idea of who they can trust and who they can’t. For the fun of it though I looked up what the Webster’s 1828 dictionary says about the word trust. It is defined as: 1) Confidence; a reliance or restring of the mind on the integrity, veracity, justice, friendship or other sound principle of another person. (Proverbs- 29:25 The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe) 2) He or that which is the ground of confidence. (Psalm- 71:5 For thou art my hope, O Lord GOD: thou art my trust from my youth.) Definition #2, along with it’s scripture reference implies that God is our trust.
We all have people in our lives who if they said that the sky was blue we would assume that it is dark and gray. Or, that it was a beautiful day out, that it was in fact a blustery day. Thankfully we have a God who is our trust and we know that if he says it, it must be true. We know that we can trust him and follow him.
Psalm 71:1-5
Psalm chapter 71:1-5 read:
1 In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion.
2 Deliver me in thy righteousness, and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me, and save me.
3 Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress.
4 Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.
5 For thou art my hope, O LORD GOD: thou art my trust from my youth.
We all know that a true friend that you can rely on is very hard to come by these days. The media and world around us do not boast integrity nor loyalty. They are mostly all bout looking out for their own interest, and trying to make you think like them. Generally speaking that is. They will take the best of what you have to offer, then cast you aside. The world wants what it can get from you, without giving back. There are some individuals who do not quite fit this pattern, but scripture states at the end of James chapter 4 verse 4 “whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.” If someone is the enemy of God, they are your enemy if you are a child of God.
Are you His Friend?
God has promised to deliver us from our enemies if we put our trust in him. After all he is our Father, and our best friend. Are you his friend, or do you spend your days trying to see what you can get out of him, only to turn around and hurt him? Think about how you feel when someone you care deeply about uses you, or purposely hurts you the next time you are faced with a choice to willfully sin or not. Remember what a great friend he is to you and strive to be a friend to him.
He loves you and protects you. He wants you to love him and be close to him. Put your trust in him and draw closer to him daily, and see if you don’t have more joy in your heart. You will feel so much more at peace and safe. When you trust in him he gives you protection from your enemies and helps you to never be afraid. Trusting him is placing yourself in the center of his love for you. You can not fear in his perfect love.
He is our rock and our fortress
The LORD is our rock and our fortress, we can rely on him to keep us protected, even from ourselves. As long as we are standing firm on him and trusting in his word, he will help us stand strong against our enemies. He will shield us from making bad decisions too, if stay inside the fortress of his knowledge and wisdom. Proverbs 4:7, 24:14
He is interested in our whole life, not just the parts we want to invite him into. How can he protect us in every area if we step outside the fortress we have in him? Think of a cop answering a report of shots fired. If he decides that he can handle those flying bullets by himself, and doesn’t use the protection he’s been given, and takes a shot to the heart, what happens? Best case scenario, he survives surgery and spends a while in the hospital in pain and agony. He probably feels pretty silly, too, for not using the tools provided to him for safety. More likely, though, his wife / family gets a visit from the Chaplin of the department, to inform them that he has passed on.
God has given us everything we need to stay safe and trust him. Don’t get swallowed up by the enemy. Claim God’s provision and stay inside his fortress of protection. This is much easier if we learn to do this as children. I thank God everyday that my children belong to God before they do me. They are being trained to trust God in all things as youngsters.
Psalm 71:6-8
Psalm 71:6-8 say:
6 By thee have I been holden upfrom the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee.
7 I am as a wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge.
8 Let my mouth be filled with thy praise and with thy honour all the day.
Psalm 63:3-7
3 Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.
4 Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.
5 My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:
6 When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.
7 Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.
God is always there for us. No matter what. He is always looking to forgive us for any wrong doing against him. He is always kind and longsuffering with us, and he wants us to be as close to him as possible. We have nothing to offer Him. And he wants only love from us. Scripture tells us that if we love him we will obey him. John 14:15 “If ye love me, keep my commandments. Because we love him we should praise him. If we trust him we will obey him, and we will praise him. After all he is worthy of all honor and praise.
Trust in God
I don’t know about you but I have never gone wrong trusting in God. He has never let me down. I have never once been hurt by him. He has only added value to my otherwise miserable life. I could not imagine raising 7 children without God. He is the one I live for, after all he is the one who gave me life. So, why not live it for him? Because I live my life for him he fills my heart with joy unspeakable, and that joy when applied to motherhood translates into abundant love and kindness toward my kids. If ever I feel frustration creeping up when they are being “testy”, I just say a prayer and remember that they are his, and that I love them, and that he trusts me with them.
I also think of all the times that I have done that to him as his child, and how he showed me kindness when I did not deserve it. Applying my Father – daughter relationship and how he handles my disobedience, really helps me to be a better mother. He has no reason to trust me, but I have every reason to trust in him.
Praise his holy name
Psalm- 145:21 “My mouth shall speak the praise of the LORD: and let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever.”
When God is your best friend and yo are trusting wholly in him and his word, living every moment in his perfect love, you can’t help but praise his holy name. He will overflow your cup with joy, (Psalm 23:5), and you won’t be able to stop yourself from praising him. Living for him is exciting and full of fun times. If you truly put your trust in him, I mean no decision made without him, great or small. Don’t leave him standing out in the cold, no matter where you go, he is invited. Your life is completely saturated in his presence. He will give you a song. Your lips will praise him.
Just think of a child, when they have their full trust in you, and you deliver on that trust, the joy they show is so inspiring. They begin to praise you, and mine love to break out in song. A couple of them even will dance. Our 2 year old especially. She just can’t help herself. She gets excited and it just happens, her little body just starts going.
I’m not saying we need to dance like little Mary, or as David did before the arc, but if the Lord leads you to, go for it. Don’t be afraid to raise your hands in praise, or bust out in song, making sweet melody to the Lord. Even if you are no good at it, when it is done from a joyful heart, fully trusting God, it is as a sweet smelling savor to him. After all he said “make a joyful noise.” I say go for it.
One response to “You can Trust in God.”
Amen! I love when the littles dance in praise!
